Our Philosophy on Safety

Because paddling outrigger canoes in the waters off Kaua’i usually takes us into rough waters and remote coastlines, often far from help or communication networks, the paddling community here tends to place an emphasis on more stringent safety practices than some of the other Hawaiian islands.

These skills and protocols, learned over generations, have been adopted and promoted by the Kaua’i Hoe Wa’a  Association. They are reflected in the mandatory safety rules that apply in each and every race

Required Safety Gear

Required safety gear for paddlers participating in Kauai Hoe Waʻa race:

  • Spare paddle

  • Leash

  • High-visibility jersey and hat.

Both the local Coast Guard and our safety escort captains stress that the colors that are most visible at sea are (in order of effectiveness):

Encouraged Safety Gear

Other highly recommended safety gear:

  • A cellphone or cell-connected Apple Watch

  • VHF marine radio

  • EPIRB or PLB type device like the Garmin InReach Mini

  • Marine whistle

  • Compact air horn

  • PFD such as an inflatable waist belt unit or US Coast Guard-approved buoyant vest.
